Mississippi Sound & the Pascagoula River Marsh

Capt. Barry Brown
February 18, 2008
Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Early Spring For Fishing

Water temps are staying in the 60 degree range, and the speckled trout are invading the shallows. We are catching some good sized ones on top water just before sunset. Top water strikes earlier in the day are more tentative; more like they are slapping at it than trying to eat it. But the late evening strikes are aggressive and on target.

We have been catching most of the speckled trout right on the edge of bars during the day. The best lure has been the cocohoe jig, and we are working it in 3 to 5 feet depths.

We are also catching a lot of nice flounder while bouncing the jigs. They are plentiful for this early in the year; another sign of an early spring for fishing.

This past weekend marked the implementation of teh new 13" legal trout length. That will allow us to keep more fish, although I have my reservations about the long-term affect of this new law.
