Speckled Trout Schooling

Capt. Barry Brown
November 6, 2008
Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

We are at the peak of fall fishing now. The speckled trout are in good numbers in all areas of the marsh. We are seeing a lot of bird activity that makes it easy to locate the fish.

If you run across the bird activity you can pretty much throw whatever you want to catch the trout. They will hit top water, suspended lures or any plastic. You can fish the plastic under a cork if you like, but that is not necessary since they will hit the bait as soon as it hits the water. The plastic under a cork is helpful, though, if there is no surface feeding going on. The splash of the cork will attract the scattered trout.

We are focusing in the main river channel for the bigger trout. Some of them will be in the five to six pound category. Most of the trout are school trout size, 13 to 15 inches.

The top water lures are best just after sunrise and just before dark. However, if you like top water fishing it's a good idea to keep trying it throughout the day, especially if you see any bait scattering or birds feeding.
