July 06/2011 San Juan River Fishing Report.

San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
The river is flowing around 500cfs. Water clarity
is clear with some moss.
The upper areas has been fishing fair to good. Early am #24 red naked lady, #24 desert storms, and #22-26 black or dark gray bodied midge pupa's. Mid am #24-26 black Krystal flash midge. #16-18 black ant patterns working along the banks, and the riffle bars. In the upper areas when site fishing, watch the fish how they react to your presentation. If they are moving away from your flies they are probably seeing the leader and moving away from it. Try getting your flies down stream of your leader in a drag free drift and see if the move towards it or away from it. Hopefully you will see the fish turn and pick up the fly. Watch the fish, if he looks like he is trying to puke, he has pick-up your fly and is trying to spit it. Lift the rod and set the hook!
The main channel and braids all fishing good with above patterns in the am and switching over to gray #22 rs2 foam wings.
Texas hole to Simon has been fishing good to great for me.
I've been using the above patterns early am and switching over the #22 gray foam wing mid to late am and fishing it into the late afternoon.
Simon canyon to the Crusher Hole take out has been fishing good in the early afternoon with gray or chocolate #22 foam wings and caddis nymphs in the afternoon. Some egg layers dancing around last chance area.
The bait waters is fishing fair to good. Pink eggs#16-18, #16-18 pheasant tails and #16 Goddard caddis, or #18 gray or olive elk hair caddis, on the surface in the afternoons.
The lower river is fishing ok depending on how thick the cottonwood seed is on the water.
Navajo lake is fishing good for bass and carp on the fly. Carp and Smallies on Mark's carp candy. Bass liking the wacky worms, and beaver tails.

San Juan River Fishing Forecast:

The ant fall could happen any day now. First good soaking rain. The caddis crunch is starting. The PMD"s will be starting in the next couple of weeks. Fish are eating large ant patterns in the riffles and along the banks.

Target Species:
