San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

SPRING PEAK RELEASE SCHEDULE

The Bureau of Reclamation has tentatively finalized this year's scheduled spring peak release from Navajo Reservoir. The schedule is still tentative due to the fact that the recent inflow forecast, received from the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center (CBRFC), showed a decrease from the previous forecast. We will be getting one more inflow forecast from the CBRFC prior to the start of the peak release (the week of May 18th). A further drop in that mid-May forecast could result in the spring peak release being reduced from the planned two-week duration down to a one-week duration. If that happens, another notice announcing the change will be distributed.
For now, the current spring peak release schedule is as follows: Reclamation will begin ramping up the release at 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. The release will be increased gradually over the next several days until the maximum release rate of 5,000 cfs is reached on Thursday, May 28th. The release will remain at 5,000 cfs through Tuesday, June 9th. On Wednesday, June 10th, the release will begin to be gradually decreased until it reaches 500 cfs on Thursday, June 18th. The attached chart shows the daily release rates throughout the spring peak release period.
The release pattern, duration, and magnitude for the spring peak release follow the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRIP) Flow Recommendations for Endangered Fish.
As noted above, this schedule is subject to change. Also, adjustments may be made to the releases if significant precipitation occurs during the scheduled release period.

The river flow is 500cfs and water clarity is 2-3'.
The upper flats and cable hole areas are fishing good to fair. The flies that were working for me was a red larva early am. Then black or gray crystal flash midge #24-26. and black or gray scintilla bubble midge patterns #24-26.
The T-hole on down is fishing good to great from the boat's. I am using #20 chocolate foam wings and dark beatis nymphs. Black midges late afternoon. The water flows will increase starting May,15th. San Juan River Fishing Forecast:
The river will be coming up and San Juan worm's gray scuds, red larva's and white myissis shrimp #20-22 will be working.
The lake bite will be hot for Small mouth bass in the next week or two.
Target Species:
Rainbow and Brown trout, Small mouth bass
