Memorial Day Fishing Report Caddis?

San Juan River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,
Happy Memorial Day to all. Thank You, and God bless all our Vets.
I would like to announce That Blue Sky Flyfishing is Proud to have Dave Torres {Super Dave} working with me. Dave is a master of the river, and will provide the ultimate experience for Blue Sky Flyfishing cliental.
The San Juan is flowing around 260cfs. Low flows until the Animas has dropped. Clear until midday when the moss starts breaking loose, and what the waders have dislodged makes it way down river. Then there is a lot of river bugger's.
The upper areas are fishing good. What I've done best with has been, a yellow or peach colored egg pattern trailed by a#22-24 black zebra midge, silver or copper wire ribbed. Small #22-24 red hot's or larva's. #24-26 Small gray or olive and black midge pupa's. #20-24 Gray or olive larva's. Small black parachute midge#24-26 if fish are just sipping. # 16-18 black ant or large griffins knatt #16-18 if fish are gulping. Midges have been clustering when conditions are right.
The braids have been fishing good when you can get into the holes. Basically the above patterns with small #24 gray Johnny flashes, or chocolate foam wings, starting late am.
The Texas Hole to Death Row is fishing good to great. The above patterns are working good. But for me It has been #18-20 Mark's Magic Midge, trailed by a #20 chocolate foam wing all the way to the end of the Quality Waters, that has kept the line tight for my clients. Simon Canyon to Crusher Hole is fishing good. #18 Mark's Magic Midge, # 20-22 Flash Back Pheasant Tails and Beatis emergers of your choice#20-22. Bait waters Down to the Village take out is fishing good with a #16-18 Pheasant tails and prince nymphs. #16-18 Pink or Peach colored egg #16-18 crawling caddis and peeking olive caddis in the lower part of the bait waters.
Late afternoon try skating a #16-18 goddard caddis in the tail-out above the ripples and see if that doesn't get a rise.
The Caddis should be a happening this year.
The Game and Fish, and NM State Parks is doing a Habitat improvement in the lower flats and back channel area's. They are planning on cleaning out the silt, add some structure, and increase the fish holding areas, like they did in the braids area a couple of years ago. For Waterfowl hunters and dog trainer's they are putting in a major waterfowl habitat area south of the dyke road from the pump jack to the parking lot at Muņoz Hole. I think the planned completed date is July,01,2013. It looks great on paper, and should be one heck of a major improvement for that area of the San Juan River.
For all of Navajo Lake Anglers the lake is coming fast. I would say about four feet in a week. The fishing is fair to good. It will get better once the lake quits rising and the fish get settled in. The Smallmouth are on the spawn.
Caught some nice crappie slabs a week ago before the lake started rising so quick. 1/8 oz. Chartreuse and white marabou jigs.
I hope this helps all of you get a Tight Line.
Tight Line's to all,
U.S.C.G. Licensed

San Juan River Fishing Forecast:

The River will just get better as Animas River Flows drop and they start raising the flow on the San Juan. No High-water run-off this year. The fish will get more active, and have more habitat as the flows increase.
Navajo Lake will be at it's best once the run-off has stopped and the lake starts to drop. Probably with-in the next couple of weeks.

Target Species:

Trophy rainbow and Brown trout, Bass, Pike, Carp
