Black Lake - Freshwater Fishing Report

Monday 9/20 I had Jeremy and Jen Hausman from PA for a guided bass trip on Black Lake. It was a cold start and fishing was difficult in the morning. Even though they are both good anglers I purposely had them fishing with crayfish on the bottom expecting a slow start until the water warmed later. Unforunately I couldn't get them bit that way either so I switched them to a senko and had them fish very slowly with it. Finally they both began catching a few bass with the biggest being a 3lb smallmouth that ate Jen's senko close to the boat at the same time Jeremy was landing a smaller largemouth. Later on the bite began to get better and they caught fish on both the crayfish and the senko. The highlight was Jen catching two more 3lb smallmouth back to back using crayfish on the same point. The crayfish produced some more 2-3 pound fish, and before we quit Jeremy nailed a couple of 2-3 pound smallmouth on a spinnerbait. They finished the day with around 15 bass which was good considering how the day began.
Good luck to all fishing the lake. Please practice catch and release.

Black Lake Fishing Forecast:

Overall the fishing still seems off to me. But it is possible I'm still locked into summer fishing and things are changing. I tend to target smallmouth for my customers most of the time due to there fighting ability and they may be moving and not biting as good right now. Everyone loves October for smallmouth and it may be because by then, the fish are finally set up in their fall locations and ready to eat for winter. Largemouth might be more consistent right now and hopefully some bigger ones will start biting.
Target Species:

Smallmouth and largemouth bass
