Hotline Report of 9-12-2011

Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Welcome to the Orleans County Fishing Hotline.
This is Mike Waterhouse, Sportfishing Coordinator.
Today is Monday September 12, 2011.
Fishing on Lake Ontario off Orleans County is setting up as a two zone fishery.
The big Chinooks are moving closer to shore preparing for their spawning runs.
Mixed in with them are some great Brown trout in that tight water.
This is the time of year that J-Plugs, big Flashers and meat rigs really come into their own.
It's also the time of year that the on-shore fishery is good for a few hours in the early morning and then again in the late afternoon and early evening.
Then there is the off shore fishery which is made up of Steelheads, Cohoes and the younger Chinooks.
Many will fish this area when the on-shore fishery slows down.
This is also the time of year that the on shore and in shore fishery really comes alive.
At the Point and on the Oak, Chinooks are being taken from the piers and along the shoreline.
Big Northern pike are being caught all along the lower portion of the Oak as well as Bass, Walleye and some Steelhead.
Above the dam on Lake Alice great catches of Bluegill and Crappie are still being taken and the stretch of Oak Orchard Creek between Lake Alice and Glenwood Lake is still excellent for Smallmouth bass.
It shouldn't be too long before good fishing starts in on both Marsh Creek and Johnson Creek.
Right now the entire length of the Erie Canal throughout Orleans County is producing some great Smallmouth bass fishing.
As I reported in the "What's News" section of the Orleans County web site, work is moving along on the repairs and updates to the power plant on the Oak.
The last word that I received from Brookfield Power was that the first turbine should be back on line by the end of this month, with the second coming on line by mid to late October.
Let's Make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.+
