Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake, Sandy Pond Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
July 20, 2008
Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

From Mexico Bay to Oswego, good numbers of plump healthy brown trout are being found in 70 to 100 feet of water. Catches of 10 to 20 fish a trip have being reported by many captains in the past week.

A full spread of NK & Dreamweaver spoons in black and silver, glow green and chartreuse will work well.

Saturday, my party landed 17 browns in 8 hours and today we landed 10 in 6 hours. That is real good trout fishing anywhere you go!

King salmon are still remaining scarce as was evident in the recent pro-am tournaments. You may find a handful one day, but they are gone the next. All reports are telling us that the giant schools of fish are way to the north off the Canadian shoreline. Our neighbors to the north are experiencing fantastic fishing and most of what they are catching our New York fish. Sooner or later they will have to start staging off of our river mouths and when they do it will business as usual.

Bass fishing in and around Mexico bay is providing some really good catches. Fish small jigs tipped with Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet. Also try the ares around 4 mile point in Scriba and the green can just west of Oswego. Worms and crayfish drifted along the bottom are always the top producers there, but many anglers prefer to cast or troll small crankbaits.

There has been some bass and northern pike action on Sandy pond and Lakeview Marsh, especially along the weed lines. Cast spinnerbaits, rubberworms, small crankbaits and of course don't forget the jitterbugs and buzzbaits for some hot top water action.

Oneida Lake anglers are continuing to do very well with walleye and bass. The deep and shallow water are both producing. Shackelton Shoals, Dutchman's Bar and Lewis Point have been especially active.

Now is a great time to schedule a lake charter. The kids are out of school, the fishing is pretty good and area captains are available for lake charters. Just log on to Lakeontariooutdoors.com There you will find, daily fishing reports, numerous links to great sites and area businesses, as well as lake charters and river guides.

This is Captain Troy Creasy, Good Fishing.
