Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Monday July 23, 2012.
The unusually warm and dry weather of the past several weeks is really taking its toll on the water levels of all waters within Orleans County and on Lake Ontario itself.
Add to that the Northeast winds which almost caused Lake Ontario to roll over and you have the receipt for some tough fishing.
On the inland waters of Orleans County Bass and Bluegills seem to be the species least affected by the conditions.
Good numbers of both Large and Smallmouth bass are being taken on the Erie Canal.
On the upper reaches of Oak Orchard River Smallmouth bass are still very active.
Lake Alice is still producing some good numbers of Bluegill, mainly on the East side of the island and by the buoy.
On Lake Ontario the water is moving very fast (temperature wise) so once you find a pocket of fish and turn to come back on them, they have moved with that pocket of water.
The most stable waters seemed to be from the 29 line and North.
Riggers 40-80 feet down, dipsys 160 to 240 feet back seem to be the best producers.
Green and chartreuse patterns are providing the majority of the bites.
Hopefully the weather will settle down and conditions will get back to somewhat normal to allow for the great fishing that we have experienced.
