Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Wednesday, January 23, 2013.
Well all of the Lake Ontario shoreline in New York State is in the deep freeze right now.
In Orleans County we don't expect to see temperatures above the freezing mark until sometime next week.
With sustained cold weather like this, it won't be long before the smaller tributaries within Orleans County slush up and Ice over.
The good news is that with the continued cold weather we should be getting some good thick ice very soon so ice fishing should be in the very near future.
The areas that normally stay open, parts of Johnson Creek and the "Oak" in the tailrace area, may slush up somewhat but still should have open water.
Up until this cold snap fishing has been fairly good with catches of Steelhead/Rainbow trout and Brown trout being taken in fairly good numbers.
Perch are beginning to show an upswing on the "Oak" from the bridges area all the way down to the Point.
I hate to sound like a broken record but please be watchful of your surroundings if fishing open waters for ice forming and if you are going to ice fish check the ice depth often.
Let's make everyday a great fishing day, right here in Orleans County
