Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Wednesday March 4, 2015.
With daytime highs reaching just above the freezing mark a slow snow and ice melt off is about to begin.
Temperatures will drop back below freezing for the next 2 days but then the warm-up begins.
This is the time of year when both ice fishermen and those who fish what open water there is need to be especially mindful of the conditions surrounding them.
Tributary fishermen need to watch for derbies and ice flows breaking loose and coming down stream.
Ice fishermen need to watch the thickness of not only the ice they are on but also the ice thickness near the shoreline.
With all of that being said, most of the tributaries within Orleans County as well as the smaller lakes still gave a good amount of ice on them.
Good ice fishing is still being reported around the bridges area of Oak Orchard River with catches of Perch, Northern pike and Steelhead being taken.
On the Oak up near the Waterport Power Plant there is open water to just past the Archer's Club area but still experiencing low water flow.
This warm-up should change those conditions with increased water flows which should bring in some fresh fish.
Even with the present conditions some Brown trout and Steelhead trout are being taken.
This coming weekend I will be attending my last sports show for the year in Allentown Pennsylvania.
If you are in the area stop by and enter to win a free fishing trip either on Lake Ontario or a guided tributary trip within Orleans County, a nights lodging, meals and more.
This is one of the package trips that are being offered thru an effort made by both Orleans and Genesee counties.
