Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report
Today is Wednesday May 20, 2015.
This has been a very busy week stocking fish off the shores of Orleans County in Lake Ontario.
Monday we stocked Atlantic salmon from a converted pontoon boat.
Tuesday we stocked Lake trout from a landing craft.
Today we will be stocking the remainder of our Chinook salmon quota.
Then in the first part of June we will be stocking our Brown trout allotment.
The answer to "Has Orleans County got fish?" is heck yes, more than you ever knew.
Cooler temperatures and prevailing winds out of the west should help to set up Lake Ontario waters for some great fishing opportunities over the next week.
Wind speeds should subside as the week goes on bringing wave heights down to more manageable levels.
Right now the sweet spot on the lake seems to be the 75 to 150 foot range of water.
Chinook salmon and steelhead trout are making up the majority of the catches.
On Oak Orchard River it's a great time for fishing with Northern pike, Rock bass and Bass making up the most common fish being caught.
Please remember that Bass season doesn't open until the 3rd Saturday in June so for now it's still catch and release.
Perch catches seem to fluctuate with no consistent catches yet.
On Lake Alice good catches of both Crappie and Bluegill are being reported especially around the Kenyonville Bridge area.
As we approach this Memorial Day weekend and all of the outdoor activities that normally take place, let's all take some time to remember those who sacrificed, some the ultimate sacrifice, to give all of us these freedoms that we enjoy each and every day.
What our service men and women have done and continue to do is what makes this country what it is and what it will continue to be.
From Point Breeze on Lake Ontario, the World Fishing Network's Ultimate Fishing Town USA and the rest of Orleans County, Let's make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.
