Lake Ontario - Freshwater Fishing Report

Today is Wednesday September 16, 2015.
It looks like our summer like weather will come to an end this weekend with Saturday's highs in the 80s and Sunday's only in the 60s.
This should be a big help in bringing those pre spawn fish much closer to shore and for them to start nosing around the tributaries for their favorite spawning spot.
Boaters close to shore and those casting from the jetties all have an opportunity to get into some great fishing.
Heavier casting spoons, stick baits and j-plugs should be some of the favorite tackle this time of year.
On the Oak Bass, Perch and Northern pike still make up the majority of the fish being taken but that should soon change to salmon, and trout.
On Lake Alice I've noticed a lot more fishermen on the Waterport Bridge but they seem to be a tight mouthed group not willing to give up too much information, but I would guess that the catches of both Bluegill and Crappie is up.
Of course Bass is still the number one fish being taken on all of the inland waters within Orleans County including the greatly underutilized Erie Canal.
As the fall tributary season gets into full swing, a review of a few simple guidelines might be in order.
Please be respectful of the great area that is available to you by reducing the footprint that you leave behind you.
Carrying out more than you brought in helps insure that all can enjoy the beauty of the area and helps keep more of it open to the public.
Be respectful to others who are enjoying all of the great fishing that our area has to offer.
There are several different techniques of tributary fishing this time of year and even though someone may be using a technique that is different than yours, show them the same courtesy that you would like to be shown.
Even though this is a put, grow and take fishery, you don't have to keep everything you catch.
With the exception of the Chinook salmon, all of the other species will return to spawn year after year.
Lastly this fall the DEC survey team will be on the tributaries doing their angling surveys.
The information that they gather helps the DEC give us the best fishery possible.
Please take the time to speak with them so they can compile as much information as possible.
From Point Breeze on Lake Ontario, the World Fishing Network's Ultimate Fishing Town USA and the rest of Orleans County, Let's make everyday a great fishing day right here in Orleans County.
