Cannabalism

Capt. Robin G Calitri
July 30, 2008
Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cannibalism on the water can be a gruesome and awesome sight. More about that later. Join me at LongIslandFlyFishing.com fishing out of Montauk or Huntington.

Jim Del Grossso and Stu Hochron boarded C Sic Again for an East End excursion. We tried the Race, Gut and Gardiners to little success. The fish were deep and taking eels so our light tackle and flies were out classed. We did take a few nice blues and and schoolie Bass before running into acres of 3-6 lb blues on the top off Goff Point.

Emory Butts and Mitch Bernstein joined me for some scouting on Monday. We found the schoolie blues and bass in two locations. We were witness to the first act of cannibalism. We were casting to breaking fish of the Northport Plant when a small blue came flying to the boat. The music started playing Da-dum-dah-dum and then there was an explosion or blood and a large blue devoured the little one.

After dropping off the morning group I picked of tre Amigos: Dana Thompson, Don Vogel and ringleader, Joel Weiss. They got there fill of blues off Northport, catching three at time on Hopkins and sluggoes as fast as I could unhook, un-tangle and re- rig.. We then had a ball with more bass inside Huntington until a gorgeous sunset and night fall ended a great trip with a discussion of Hemmingway's, "Indian Camp"..

Mitch Bernstein and I chased down some rumors of Bonito off Connecticut and the Loading Platform off Asharoken. No Bones, so we scouted indide Northport bay and found a mega catch of small schoolie stripers and blues. I was stripping in a 10 inch bass when a twenty pounder inhaled it on the surface. I tried to let her run and set the hook but the fly was in the smaller bass's mouth. At least I saved the baby. Three cheers for captain Robin
