Come Fish NY

What a mixed bag this beginning of August brings! Some of my guests tell be that this is dead time. Tell that to the fish. There have been blues on top and on jigs in the Huntington area. There are plenty of schoolie bass for the light tackle and fly rod crowd. If you are too hot, use a kayak.

The Long Island Bassmasters held a tournament on forge Pond in Riverhead. It was a tough day but Ed Fredericks found enough weight, almost 12 pounds for five fish, to win. Congrats ED.

Jim Del Grosso and Mitch Bernstein teamed up with me for a Montauk jaunt. We fooled around in the fog for a while and then headed to the south side. We found tons of 23-27inch bass boiling in shallow water. We could sight them under the boast. After catching about nine million bass we headed east to look for the tuna fish. We were not too far when we came upon school after school of tuna breaking on bait. Jim had a couple of hits on a large jig and I dropped one on the fly. It was Mitch who hooked up and held on. He landed a nice blue fin on 17 pound line. This is fun on light tackle!

Matt Lipsit joined dad Rich (Dica) on my boat, Csicagain, this week. We chased around Huntington Bay and found some nice blues willing to take poppers. We also found the small bass.
