Fishing Report for New York - Long Island North Shore

Capt. Robin G Calitri

Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

LongIslandFlyFishing.com

On Monday , July 24, Lewis Kassel, a fine photographer from Hopewell Junction, NJ, joined me on the Scout in Huntington. Lewis had never really fished before but at 50+ he picked up the spin casting and was into tons of schoolie bass and blues off CSicAgain. We found most of the fish in tight to cover in shallow water. Rubber shads and bucktails worked best. Target Rock and Northport Bay fished well. There were some bigger fish off Eaton’s Neck.

On Wednesday, July 26, Jim DelGrosso, Mitch Bernstein, Emory butts and I fished the East End. We had a phenomenal day! We began with nice sized blues on the north side of Montauk. We then had bass on the south side. Clousers in chartreuse or red were the fly ticket while rattle traps, rubber and bucktails worked for the casters. We then ran about 20 miles south in search of tunas. We saw and cast to a few but no bites. We then came upon some flotsdam and cast to Mahi until our arms fell off. We had follows but no takers. It was fun though! We then hit the point again and went to the Race where we found good sized bass and blues. We did a bail job in the rips and then headed back to Montauk Point to finish with more bass and blues. It don’t get much betta dan dis! The 235 Scout Sportfisher was buildfor this kind of mileage.

Bill Herzig, Daughter Elizabeth and Uncle Dave Kamanski had a charter out of Duck Island, Northport on Monday, July 31 . When I picked them up at the Herzig’s wonderful waterfront retreat, I asked them if they were up for some ‘combat fishing”? They thought that tht sounded ,like fun. For the next four hours, they were into blues, bunker and blood. The fish were from 7-12 pounds and ate bombers, bucktails and bunker. They ate through 100lb fluoro and wire. What a blast. The only downside was cleaning the boat and replacing broken tackle. Look for the bunker schools that are being harassed and cast to the edges of the school.

Mitch Bernstein and I scouted Bonito from Northport to Mount Sinai. No Bonito! We did have some nice schoolie bass off Oldfields and Northport Bay. Blues are all over! BASST, Captain Robin Calitri
