Fishing Report for New York - Long Island North Shore

Capt. Robin G Calitri
May 18, 2007
Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

It is a new season!

I wish all my fellow anglers well after a long and tough winter. I have my ‘winter thing’, skiing as I hope that you all do. I just came back from an April Helicopter skiing adventure in British Columbia. Now to the fishing.

We began with and exploratory around Huntington and I found some schoolie Bass on the fly. Gary Homkow and his daughter Jeanie, although novice fly fishers, showed the skill necessary to catch over 30 bass between 12 and 24 inches. We ran all over Northport and Huntington to find a few fish but found the mother load at LIPA.

Jim DelGrosso on East Hampton hosted Stu Hochron and me for a wonderful day of backwater striper fishing in the Gardiner’s Island area. We had bass to about 21 inches. Jim reports that the blues have also shown up.

The Long Island Bassmasters held two tournaments in Connecticut. Candlewood is producig wonderful Smallmouth bass. Brendan Cuccinello won a major open tournament there.

Joel, Karen, Holly and Charlie of the Weiss group took and evening charter on C SIC AGAIN on the 15th. They used poppers, rattletraps and plastics to do a job on the fish. There were bass to 24 inched to be had. Karen took a nice keeper weakfish. Leader Joel took the first Bass but then the ladies did all the remainder of the damage. Biggest fish was about 5 pounds.

The Fishermans Conservation Association held the prestigious, catch and release, Manhattan Cup out of Chealsea Piers in Manhattan. Frank Criscitelli, Anthony Gangone and David Fallon deserve a ton of credit for spearheading this event on a rainy May 19..
