Long Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Long Island Report fishing with Captain Robin
Bait, Bass and Blues!!
New York may be the place to be in the late spring. Jamaica Bay is fishing well and producing some of the largest weakfish ever recorded. Many are 15 plus pounds.
The East End has nice Bass in skinny water for the fly rodders and light tackle enthusiast. I fished with Jim Del Grosso out of Acabonic and we had some nice fish.
HOME TOWN NEWS
The Huntington area is hot, hot, hot!
I fished with Emory Butts and Mitch Bernstein last week and took a fat 20 pound bass on a popper ten feet from the boat. Talk about a ‘heart attack’! We also had some smaller bass and blues around Cold Spring Harbor and Huntington Bay.
Brendan and Al Cuccinello with cousin Joe , joined me on CSICAGAIN. We fished Smithtown Bay and began with bass and blues on the top. Brendan took a nice keeper on light tackle. We then fished for fluke and had many throwbacks and 5 nice keepers. We ended the day with the Bass and Blues. The key to the fluke was bucktails and droppers ( spearing tipped) moved very slowly along the bottom in 4-12 feet of water. The Bass wanted something white and took on the drop.
I had the honor to taking two solid trouters out for their first saltwater fish. Ted Demetriou was visiting family on Long Island. He lives ins Colorado Springs and fishes for those big Colorado trout with a fly rod. Well the Smithtown Bay Bass and Blues gave Ted non-stop action. He had fish from morning to evening for eight solid hours.
Anthony and Hazel Grace of Cheshire, England were in New York for their first time. They loved our city and the people and reminded me of how lucky we are to live here. The fish gave them a wonderful welcome also. Tony is an accomplished salmon and trout angler but he was amazed a the top water action and the strength of our Bass and Blues. He caught fish from the LIPA drop off to Old Field Point. The mouth of the Nissaquogue produced Bass to 27 inches. We even forced Hazel to catch one. Good job Tony.
WHOPPERS
The BASSt report comes from Scot Calitri fishing out of Glouchester, Mass. He was out about ten miles jigging cod in 200 feet of water. All of a sudden 30+ humpback whales began to cavort around the 18foot Maritime skiff. Soon some breaks of fish were noted and the first cast produces a large Bass followed by large blues. It was a dream mornig with blues to 12 pounds and bass to over 40 inches. Way to go son!
