Lake Ontario Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
May 18, 2008
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Sad to say, but steelhead fishing on the salmon river is finally winding down. There is still plenty of fish in a few dark deep holes but mass exit has been taking place and most are back in the lake, putting on much needed body weight.

Lake Ontario brown trout fishing in the Oswego / Mexico Bay area has been up and down. If the winds are right, we hammer them, if not we pick away at them. Fishing the shoreline close to the shore run smithwick and reef runner stickbaits off the planer boards back 80 to 150 feet. Feel free to add a one or two split shot to help with weeds and keep them down and extra foot or so.

On the downriggers, Black / silver white belly spoons are working early, then switch to dreamweaver Super slims in the chicken wing, mixed veggie and rosemary's baby. Vary your trolling speed from 2. 0 to 2.5 and don't troll in a straight line. S turns work the best as any speed variations can and will trigger strikes from Mr. Brown Trout.

The bonus fish have been the 5 to 12 pound Chinooks showing up. what a great fight on light tackle. Same spoons, same depth, you just never know what is going to bite. Throw in a steelhead or two and a big ole walleye if you are near the harbor and you have a day dreams are made from.

I have been on Oneida Lake as well the last few days and the fishing there is fair to excellent, depending again on the wind. One trip we work for 4 or 5 keepers and the next we fill the boat. Heddon Sonars in silver with a piece of chartreuse tape on the sides has been our best bait. We also took a few on Challenger jigs in black and black & purple, tipped with a nightcrawler. Don't forget to add a stinger hook as the fish have been biting real light. We are also taking some nice perch and a few smallmouth for fun.

I have been working the Sylvan Beach area in 20 to 34 FOW from Lewis Point to the North shore.

Things will just keep getting beter as the water warms up.

West End Lake O Report

Oak Orchard boats are experiencing a silver mixed bag of Chinook, steelhead and Coho fishing the top 4o ft over 80 to 130 Fow .Here there is a four degree temperature break with a heavy trash line to mark the hot zone .Mag nk's down deep are taking the kings with 25 to 30 ft riggers with sliders rigged with silver orange and "orange crush" spoons for the steels .Board lines with small NK c'5's, Stingers and J-9 gfr rapalas with one buckshot will take surface fish .
The king /steelhead fishery between Olcott,Wilson and Youngstown has been on fire since the LOC Derby in 80 to 200 fow with the strike zone staying at 30 to 80 dn with spoon presentations on riggers and divers nailing 8 to 20 lb average kings daily. Western Basin surface water temperature is 47 which is keeping schools of fish within 2 miles of every port . Cool weather is forecast on the 10 day forecast so fish location will be stable and action good to excellent. The Niagara river still has large steelhead available in the Artpark and Devil's hole drift using kwickfish plugs out of Lewiston,Walleye ,big lakers and browns are hitting large minnows on the inside hole at the green buoy of Youngstown.
