Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
Summer is here and what better time to take advantage of the tremendous fishing opportunities that our area has to offer.
Smallmouth Bass are providing great action from Lake Ontario and Oneida Lake. White and yellow spinnerbaits as well as shallow diving crankbaits are working well. In deeper waters, try small jigs tipped with yellow or white Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet.
The walleye has slowed down on Oneida Lake. Some of the fish have moved out and others have taken shelter in the heavy weeds in 8 to 15 FOW.
Your best bet is to fish the deeper water, 28-40 ft., next to any structure. Jigs tipped with night crawlers and small trolled stickbaits are working well.
The best bite this week on the open water of Lake Ontario is still brown trout. Work 20 to 80 feet of water. Remember, brown trout have no problem surviving in 60 to 70 degree water, so don't think you always have to fish the cold water to find them. Dreamweaver spoons in the Dirty White boy, Coyote, Glow frog and Dolphin patterns are taking our fish.

Saturday long time friend Skeeter Levan joined me with three guys from my home town. We started out slow and then we found them. The bite was fast and furious on the browns and we took a nice steelhead too. Sorry, no picturs as the camera was MIA.
Sunday was slower for us as the water was flat and the fish were stubborn. We picked at them for a few hours and then we struggled when the sun got high. Paul O'Hora and the gang hung in there and decided to try again in August as we generally do pretty well when he fishes with me. Thanks again guys, see you soon.
The salmon are here one day and gone the next, which is typical for this time of year. Work the deeper water, 130 to 300 feet. find the cold temperature, 40 to 50 degrees and concentrate your spread there. Troll flashers with atomic flies at 2.3 to 3.0 mph. NK magnum spoons in Black green glow have been taking some nice fish as well.
The pike fishing on Sandy Pond is steady but you have to work for them. Pan fish are still providing good action around the shoreline .
