Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
What a week to be on the water. Mild temps and near perfect water conditions have prompted many of the recently tight lipped trout to open there mouths for our offerings.
We even had one morning this week that we didn't have to chip ice out of our guides! It doesn't get any better!
Brown trout Bonanza!
While we picked away at the steelhead in every 8 or 10 spots, the Salmon River is full of hungry beautifully colored brown trout. I can honestly say that I had two days recently that we landed more browns in this river than I have in my entire career. The Salmon River is not traditionally known for big numbers of BT's but let me tell you. They are here. Most are only 2 to 4 pounds, but they fight great and some have been pushing weights up to 7 pounds. Great Fish!
Egg sacs in pink and white, the pink worm and beads, under floats continue to produce super catches.
Look for fish to be real tight to shore, (hence; do not wade out) and in the seams and current breaks.
I can also tell you that the steelhead are beginning to spawn heavy and I see more redds each day.
The time is now. Spring trout fishing is some of the best of the year. I am sure we will have some cold raw days yet but spring is in sight.
Speaking of brown trout, lakeshore boat launches are open, some have ventured out into Lake O already and reports have been pretty good. Considering the ice cold water that we have seems like the fish are there and that will just get better by the day. Gas prices are down and we are all looking forward to a great boating season over the next 6 months!

Water flows are starting to settle down on all of rivers and creeks through out Western New York. The area smaller streams and creeks are now in ideal fishing conditions. Because of the high water the steelheads are spread out through these strains and creeks, be prepared to do a little walking to find some fish. Water temperatures are now fluctuating between the high 30s and low 40s degrees.
Oak Orchard River is still high and off-color and care is needed when you are wading this river. Winter temperatures for the Oak have been running a few degrees cooler, fluctuating between 36 to 38 degrees. As soon as water flow drops a little and the water temperature increases a couple degrees, the fishing will heat up. This should only take a few warm days. This is spring steelhead fishing at it's best, and conditions can and do change daily.
Anyone thinking of fishing the Genesee River needs to think otherwise this river is extremely high and very muddy. It is highly doubtful that we will have a chance to fish the Genesee River until late spring.
I had a few more days open up and they are prime dates.
