New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
August 27, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

They Are Here!!!!!!!!

Salmon fishing on many parts of the lake continues to be outstanding. Anglers in the Oswego, Mexico and Pulaski area have been catching salmon from 200 ft. of water inshore to 60 ft. Just east and west of Oswego the thermocline has been 75-80 ft. below the surface. A variety of bait is working…cutbait, flies, spoons and j-plugs. E-Chip & Spin Doctor attractors with the Hammer, green, sweetpea, crusher and Mirage have been taking fish. A variety of spoons have also been working well including the Michigan Stinger Natural Born Killer and the Tuxedo in the magnum and stingray size.

Wow What a season this is turning out to be. We destroyed them in July and then we struggled through the first half of August, but now it is a blood bath!!

The walleye action has been good on Oneida Lake. Troll the deeper water pulling lead core in five or six colors. Jr. thundersticks and rapalas are working well. Fish anywhere from Buoy 121 to Buoy 109 but fish the north side of the buoys. Bass are active along the rock piles using crayfish.

Conditions have remained about the same in the Oswego river. The water level remains low and the river is producing catfish on cutbait and bass are taking minnows and worms. Walleyes are hitting nightcrawlers in the harbor area and perch are active behind Breitbeck Park using worms and minnows. Anglers are finding bass near the breakwall and the Lighthouse, at flatrock, Ford Shoals and Smith Beach.

I hear there is some action on the salmon river for a few early kings that came up. There should be a fishable number of fish in the river at this time. Don’t be afraid to do some scouting.

Bass fishing in and around mexico bay and Oswego is providing some really good catches. Fish small jigs tipped with Mister Twister grubs. Slowly bounce the jigs off rocky bottoms and work the shoals and drop-offs. Crabs and worms are always a good bet.
