New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
December 23, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

The cold weather we experienced earlier this week made for some good ice making conditions. Now it is raining and 48 degrees.

Black Lake, parts of Sandy Pondand the smaller lakes now have good ice. Perch and Pike are biting in 10 to 12 feet of water with small minnows and jigs working best.

Please use extra caution when fishing early ice. Check the thickness as you work your way out.

With the water running at 335 cfs on the salmon river and this nice early winter thaw, conditions are really good. Look for some good steelhead fishing over the next few weeks. There are fresh fish scattered throughout the river. Pink and blue egg sac are working the best. John Williams and I did a short float from Rt2A to the Ball Park this am.

We never made more than a dozen drifts in a spot as we just wanted to cover water. We hit fish in 10 out of 15 places we fished. The bite was on early, but it seemed the water was geting pounded, as there was quite a few anglers out enjoying the warmer weather.

The Oswego River is still running high, but it is at a very fishable level. Concentrate your efforts at the dam, lock 7 or the Harbor behind the hotels. Chartreuse and pink eggs sacs, along with white jigs are doing the job.
