New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
January 7, 2008
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Busy, Busy, Busy!!!!

That pretty much describes this past weekend on the Salmon River. Wow, are there a lot of people fishing right now. If you don't like crowds, than I would stay away. That is the bad news. Everything else is good, as the the fish are here and even under the worse conditions, we still pick away at them all day long.

I spent the last two days with Dale and Steve. This was Dales first trip with me and Steve has fished with me for years. We beat on them pretty good, as we found fish about everywhere we stopped. Finding a place to stop was the hard part.

White and blue egg sacs under a float took most of our fish and although the majority of the fish are in the deep winter holding spots, there are plenty of fresh fish moving through and stopping in the pockets. Fish it all! Don't pass anything up. You never know.

We have had just enough cold air to make some ice on the lakes and bays to the north.

I would still be very careful when going out on to the ice and check the thickness as you go.

My friends from the pond have been fishing about everyday and have been rewarded with some great catches of nice size perch, walleye and pike. Small minnows and jigs in 8 to 20 feet of water are working well.

The Oswego river is still high and although it has plenty of browns and rainbows it was slow this past week. White jigs and pink eggs are working best. Most of the fish are being caught behind the Hotels in the Harbor.

Open Dates

January 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22.
