New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
January 7, 2003
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Good Winter Fishing!!

The first week of January was real good with seasonal temps and plenty of fish. The Salmon and Oswego are both fishing good, with fresh fish throughout both rivers. The salmon river hot spots have been from the sportsman hole down to Rt 81. The Oswego has steelhead at the dam and lot's of browns in the Harbor. The Oswego is still real high, but it is dropping steadily. Look for this river to be Red Hot in a few days, unless of course the slush keeps us off of it. any time temps drop below 25 there will be slush on the small streams, Oswego and the lower salmon river.

All is quiet right now across the big lake. Snow is falling today and there is about 6 fresh inches in the yard. Temps are not real bad, but a brisk wind will make things interesting for the hardy angler. The lower river is producing a few fresh fish everyday. Blue and pink sacs and small jigs continue to be the top producers. Spend your time at the head and gut of the deep pools. Jigs and egg sacs should work best. Experiment with sizes from 8 to 14. Good luck.

Once again I will be participating in the State of the Lake meetings being held over the next few weeks with stakeholders and the DEC. Basically we will be discussing stocking levels, baitfish populations, the lake's ecosystem and the how tourism has been effected. I will keep everyone up to date on the results of our meetings.

I have just recently mailed out my Winter 2002 Newsletter. If you did not receive a copy and would like one, just e-mail me with your street address and I will drop one in the mail. Just to bring you up to date. High Adventure Sportfishing is currently taking reservations for Spring, Summer and Fall, Lake and River charters.
