New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
August 19, 2003
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

There Here!!!!!!!!

I have to start by apologizing for the long lapse of reports. I have been doubled up for over two weeks straight and there just isn't any time to post a report at night.

Anyway, here we go. The weekend brought high winds and OK fishing at best. Some boats did well but we struggled for several days. Everyone gets their turn in the barrel I guess. We had been fishing 8 to 12 miles offshore in 550 to 600 feet of water. Catches included majors, 2 yr. old kings, giant lake trout and a few steelhead. I was averaging one steelhead per trip.

The winds came and blew that program apart, but it did bring the fish closer to shore.

Monday and Today was another story. We had real good catches both days. The big boys are planted firmly on the bottom in 95 to 120 feeet of water, from west of Oswego to Nine mile point. You have to scratch bottom and dig trenches but they are there! The bonus is browns and lakers are suspended above them 75 to 90 down run dodger flies on the bottom and spoons over the top.

The best baits have been G-Flies in Seaweed and Green Cheese. Spoons have been Fishlanders, Dreamweavers and NK's in green and chartreuse, black and silver and monkey puke. I have been running 2.1 to 2.3 . But don't be afraid to kick it up if nothing is happening.

The big guys are here. Where are you? Troy
