Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Ok, I am back from fishing the western tribs. I have been away too long. Just ask my dogs, No, I mean my wife.
I came back with a nasty flu/cold that I am still fighting off. Damn all nighters at the Canadian stip clubs. The things I do for my clients. Took a few days to fill some doe tags and look for the monster buck. No monsters yet!
Fished locally a few days and found steelhead most places we have fished. It has been raining steady all day and the streams are rising real fast, again. This will change things!
Look for the small streams to blow out quick and the big rivers may be right behind them. The SR is up to 900 as we speak. The forecast calls for at least another 1/2inch before it is all over.
The three weeks I spent in Orleans and Niagara county can be summed up in one word. Solid. We didn't kill them everyday, but we never had a bad day. You knew that you would get at least a few each time out. Just like the kings ran smaller this year, it was obvious after the lake season that the browns would be smaller also. The cold winter just wasn't condusive for putting on weight. At least for the fish. Seems like we have no trouble with weight gain during the winter months!
In 18 days with a total of 37 angler days we landed 296 browns, 28 rainbows and about 10 kings. (Most salmon were broke off intentionally). That is 334 fish or about 9 fish landed per angler per day. Guess we spoiled everyone again. Keep in mind that we had a few 40 fish days so some guys really only landed a few fish on the slower days. Everyday can't be Disney world.
The Oak continues to produce good numbers of fish and a great flow of high slightly stained water. The crowds again this year were horrible. Build it and they will come! What are you going to do. Everyone wants a piece of the pie and rightfully so. Some have given up due to the crowded conditions and others just wear blinders.
I am in the creeks the next few days, then back on the river for the weekend. I will try to update regularly again now that I am home.
.I want to send a special thanks out to all my guests that endured another salmon/brown trout season. Between fish, lost fish, crowds, no water, flood water, broken vehicles and broken hearts, (No Jimmy you can't take the girls home. We got through it. The next four months will be gentlemens fishing, at a much more relaxed pace. I hope.
The Fall of 2004 is all but booked so if you haven't reserved your days yet, get with me real soon.
I want to send out my sincere sympathy to Aaron Gordons wife and family. Aaron was our webmaster and a good friend. He died recently at a age that most of us just started to live. It really makes you step back and appreciate all the things we have. God Bless, Troy
