New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report 1/12/04

We toughed it Out!

By: Troy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We had high hopes as we headed for the Oswego River this AM. The weatherman said that temps may reach 29. That is balmy compared to the-25 we have been experiencing.

I laid out my trusty thermometer on the tray next to my rowing seat, 3 degrees at 7:00 AM. We launched the boat and set lines

We immediately took a nice steelhead on a gold #35 Hot Shot. We tried to fish eggs, but they froze solid as fast as we casted them out. Even the hooks on the plugs froze. We had two other quick pullovers but with the hooks looking like an ice cube, the fish didn't stick.

By noon it reached 20 but as the air warmed all the anchor ice broke free and the slush tormented us the rest of the day.

We started fishing jigs, as I could keep them thawed, by putting them in my mouth.

We took several browns in the Harbor and missed a few more.

The snow and wind picked up and the air temp fell. Dave and Joe fished hard and hung tough. It wasn't a banner day for the Oswego but with flows at 12,900 and slush, I guess we did OK. A friend of mine floated the salmon river and hooked and landed only one.

More of the same weather is forecasted for this week. Now is a good time to tie flies and egg sacs, fine tune your gear and prepare for the next warm up.
