New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
June 4, 2004
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

It's June and the Fishing is Good!

Well, the Hotspot over the holiday weekend had to be the east shore of Oneida lake. The walleye fishing there has been incredible. Catches of 30 to 40 fish per day have been reported. During the day, fish nightcrawlers behind spinner rigs, and just slowly retrieve them across the bottom. At night cast or troll small rapalas in any of the hologram colors. Work the area around sylvan beach in 8 to 15 feet of water. Although many fish are under the 18 inch minimum length, there has been plenty of keepers there as well.

The salmon fishing on Lake Ontario continues to be steady with spoons and dodgers/ flies working the best. Tom Allen of Oswego has weighed in several fish over the 20 pound mark in the last few days.

Everyone is asking where are all the salmon coming from? I know I am not complaining about it. The problem is that there is nobody here to catch them. Our marina is dead quiet. We have the fish, but not the anglers. What are you guys waitng for? It doesn't get any better than this!

I spent two days this week flyfishing for trout in the upper salmon river and some small streams, we took about 15 rainbows 8 to 15 inches, a small Atlantic and a gorgeous 12 inch brook trout. Wooly buggers and a #16 caddis was doing the damage.

The brown trout are hitting good early in the morning in the areas around the green can and 4 mile point. The best baits are a black silver white belly smithwick, fished on the surface about 150 feet behind the boat and raider spoons in black and silver, fished 3 to 12 feet down off of the downriggers.

The pike fishing on Sandy pond continues to be very good. Fish with large shiners, spoons, stickbaits & spinnerbaits. Work the weedlines and the dropoffs.

Drifting worms under a bobber at Wright's Landing and along the east wall in the Oswego Harbor is producing yellow perch, rock bass and sunfish. The walleye fishing there has been slow due to the high muddy water.

I have some good days open in the upcoming weeks. If you want fish, we got them.

Troy
