New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
June 27, 2004
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Saturday was another great day on Lake Ontario out of Oswego, as Chris, Denise, Dane and Theresa limited out on trophy brown trout! We picked a few early and then it died as the lake was flat and there was some boat traffic. Around 10:00 the wind picked up and the bite was on!

The early fish beat us. They took our lures, broke a few knots and made us look bad. Something like 4 for 10. Then we rebounded and ended up with 13 and a few bass!

We fished 40 to 70 feet of water west of Oswego. We took some fish off the boards on black/silver/white bellied smithwicks. The downriggers fired 15 to 20 down, 20 to 40 back on Blue and Black alewife Raider spoons and lemon lime Michigan stingers.

The salmon started to show back up in 140 to 250 feet of water just west of the Harbor. A few fish in the 10 to 20 pound range were caught on Saturday.

Sunday was another story as again heavy winds plaqued anglers from mid morning on. It was too rough to kep the proper speed and fishing was tough for the few that stayed. By 10:00 most of the boats were back at the dock. Well better then last weekend, at least we got one day of fishing in.

TIPS:

REMEMBER: Although the bass fishing around the discharge at Nine Mile Point is some of the best, this area is off limits to boating. I see the Coast Guard patrolling the shoreline, so make sure you stay outside of the buoys.

For something different, treat yourself to a day of Northern pike fishing. These ferocious fighters are some of the easiest fish to catch and provide some of the best excitement fishing can offer. It's a good idea to fish near deep weedlines. Lakeview Marsh the lower salmon river and Sandy Pond are all good bets. Start with a lively presentation such as crankbaits or spinners. Troll them right near the edge of the weeds. If this doesn’t produce try some weedless lures and fish right through the lily pads and weed beds. Make sure you use a heavy leader or even a steel leader as their teeth wil cut most fishing line.

Charter boat captains are concentrating their efforts on all the brown trout that have moved into 30 to 80 feet of water from nine mile point to the Oswego River. Trout from 3 to 15 pounds are being caught on a regular basis. Early morning has been the best bite with most fish taking Raider spoons in Black and Silver and thundersticks in blue and silver. Most fish are coming out of 50 to 60 degree water, so run your lures in and around that temparature.

Mark your calendar on July 9 & 10 as the Gander Mountain 10th Annual Oswego Pro-Am tournament. will be held those two days. Top anglers from across the lake will be competing for cash and prizes. Throughout the week there will be a Sportsman Flea Market, and a benefit fishing day for the Parents of Special Children at Mike's Marina in Mexico. Go to the Pulaski Chamber of Commerce website at
