New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Lake Fishing Report 5/30/06

By: Troy Creasy

The key to catching browns right now is all about getting to the spot early. The bite is very, very early so getting there before dawn makes all the diference. I hate to do it, but we are leaving the dock at 4 AM. It stinks, but it does pay off.

While many are whining of slow catches, High Adventure clients have been reaping the rewards of the pre-dawn bite. Look at the photos below, most are taken before the sun is up. Set that alarm and hour earlier and get out there!!

Then, when the bite slows down, you can take a nap.

The best baits are a black silver white belly smithwick, fished on the surface about 150 feet behind the boat and raider and dream weaver spoons in black and silver, glow green, and orange, fished 10 to 30 feet down off of the downriggers.

The salmon fishing continues to be fair with spoons and dodgers/ flies working the best. Things should start seting back up this week, as more favorable winds are in the forecast. Most of the big kings over the weekend were caught west of Oswego towards Fair Haven, but a few were taken in Mexico Bay.

The sleeper is the great steelhead fishing we are finding offshore. My new Lowrance 111 gives me a 20 minute surface temp graph and I can track the breaks. What a difference this has made in our search for Ironheads, As you can see from the pics below.

Shelley and I even made it out for a few hours Monday afternoon. She can still put them away. Check out those biceps!!

Craig came up for a shot at some browns and a trophy walleye. This year has been tough, in fact I am moving my trips to Oneida lake due to the lack of activity in the Oswego Harbor. But he did manage some trout and one big 11 pound hog!

I ran a trip on Oneida Friday night and we managed 7 good keepers and some shorts. It was a holiday and the boat traffic was fierce.

The pike fishing on Sandy pond is very good. Fish with large shiners, spoons, stickbaits & spinnerbaits. Work the weedlines and the dropoffs.

Drifting worms under a bobber at Wright's Landing and along the east wall in the Oswego Harbor is producing yellow perch, rock bass and sunfish.

Wow it is almost June already and that means that the season opener for bass is about three weeks away. I have openings for bass trips and combo bass and walleye on Oneida lake.

Plenty of days open in June and July & August

September & October are Full for river trips. I do have some days on the lake in the middle of the month. Call for referral guides

November - 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, 30.
