Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

The recent snow melt and rain is keeping the areas streams and rivers high but very fishable.
A variety of techniques for catching steelhead in this water flow has been working. Some anglers are swinging large flies with sink tips on single or double handed rods, while other anglers are using egg patterns and a strike indicator and the old stand by of bottom bouncing has also been effective. Float fishing with egg sacs and bottom bouncing with egg sacs and flies has also been effective.
On the Oswego river The water level is improving dropping to about 13,000cfs. The weather for the weekend looks good with mild temperatures and just an occasional shower predicted. Look for trout and some salmon from the Kiddie Pool up to the powerhouse and also along the east side behind the hotels. Egg sacs, estaz flies, Hot-n-Tots, skein, nightcrawlers and meal worms are working well. Walleyes are being taken from near the railroad bridge on night crawlers and stickbaits and perch are taking worms, minnows and spikes near the Coast Guard Station.
The night bite on Oneida Lake is very good. You will, however, run into the occasional night when the walleyes just don't want to cooperate. Saturday was an excellent night with a lot of action - Sunday was quiet. Fishing in about 5 ½ feet of water has been very productive with blue and silver stickbaits or you can jig with sonars in the deeper water. Drifting minnows in the shallows along the structures is producing bass but the perch have been scarce.
