New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
December 17, 2006
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report 12/18/06

The Salmon River continues to be plaqued with erratic water flows. We are all aware that they still have repair work on the dam, but why didn't they start it earlier in the year? You just don't want to be screwing with concrete in the Winter.

What many may not know is that if we turn bitter cold, like an old fashion NY winter and there is no water in the reservoir we will freeze up just like all other streams. No Winter fishing!! The trout will either have to drop out or could even be trapped between ice packs like what happens on the Sandy's. Not a good scenario.

I was at the meeting with the DEC last Thursday night. We had a great turnout and discused some serious issues.

They included: Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia, 2008 Regulation proposals, Boat, lake, tributary creel survey's, Hatchery reports, and some very good information given by the biologists. I will be posting more in the on-line edition soon.

Fishing is still pretty good overall, but not very consistent. with the water and water temp going up and down constantly, the fish do not always cooperate. saturday was tough for just about everybody I talked to, although a few did get into them. Sunday was much better for theboats even though the river came up another 1,000 cfs.

I hit one fish in a traditional winter holding spot and the next right in the heat, where I would find them in early November or early May. You have to fish everything.

Pink or white eggs are still the best bait overall and plugs are taking a good number of fish for the driftbaots. Flyfishing has been tough as the fish are spread out and the water is fast and deep.

John Williams just whacked a smasher buck in Montana and then he lands three nice chromers with me on the river.

Want to Fish?? I have December 27, 29, 30, 31. First come, First serve.

What do You want for Christmas?

Can't help you with the above but we have gift Certifictes available for river trips, lake charters and subscriptions. We also have LOO and High Adventure Hats and T-shirts.

See you out there, Troy
