New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
December 22, 2006
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

I have always been a big fan of high water, but not high ice water. The melting snow on the hill has dropped the water temp down to 34 degrees and Mr steelehead is in winter mode.

Plenty of fish in the river but as their metabolism slows so does the bite. We are picking a few each trip, but nothing like it was.

The Oswego is the place to be right now, as the water has dropped to about 11,000 cfs and the river is finally at a very fishable level. If you have been wanting to get on that river, now is the time.

You will find browns and steelhead scattered from top to bottom. Work the areas around the dam, behind Let's Island and at the locks. Eggs sacs and small jigs under floats are working well.

Don't be afraid to put in some time in the harbor as well as post spawn browns will be hanging in the slower water. Fish white bucktail jigs and tip them with a small minnow.

The creeks to the North have been fishing good, but the water their has dropped and the pressure has been heavy.

Oneida Lake walleye fishing is still great and although there is still no ice, bank anglers and boaters are catching fish. Fish near Sylvan beach in the evening and cast small stickbaits in Black & Silver and Blue & Silver.

If you a have question or comment, feel free to e-mail me anytime. Send your mail to Troy @ lakeontariooutdoors.com or you can also log on to our website at www.Lakeontariooutdoors.com for daily fishing reports, river guides, as well as numerous links to great sites and area businesses.

Remember to stay safe, be respectful of others and put a few back for another day.

This is Captain Troy Creasy, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
