New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
January 29, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

The ice fishing season throughout the listening area is finally in full swing. All area lakes have 6 to 10 inches of good ice.

Chaumont Bay Sandy Pond and Black Lake continues to produce great catches of perch.

Sandy Pond is giving up some nice size pike as well.

There is safe ice in many spots but as always check the ice before you venture out.

Anglers are catching some crappies and perch using spikes, minnows and wax worms with teardrop and caty jigs.

The water level on the Oswego is a fishable 12,000cfs but ice and slush are still a problem on the colder days.

Steelhead and brown trout are taking worms, minnows, egg sacs and white bucktail jigs.

One of the driftboats had a great catch of fish just a few days ago.

If you want to fish steelhead, you have to stay up river in the Altmar area. The remainder of the river is all slush. Fish egg sacs and small flies in blue and white. Look for the fish to be in the deepest slowest water.
