New York Fishing Report for Lake Ontario and Salmon River

Capt. Troy Creasy
March 14, 2007
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Salmon river fishing Report 3/14/07

I am back on the river about everyday now as many of our guests have cabin fever and the steelhead bug has settled in.

March is always hit or miss and Mike and Dave hit them pretty good the last few days. We fished Altmar to 2A both days and didn't hook a lot of fish but the landing percentage was very, very good. I attribute this to good rod handling for one, and quality hooks like the mustad C068, what a great hook.

We took a mix of fresh and spawning fish. I really don't see a lot of fish. The water is very clear and we have been looking pretty close.

This snowmelt and rising water will put a damper on things for sure. I am sure we will work hard for them until we start getting dropbacks and the water warms. we should see a few more fresh fish enter the system in the creeks as they begin to open up.

Steelhead are scattered from top to bottom. Cover a lot of water and try downisizing your egg sacs. It seems they like the smaller ones better. Don’t be afraid to fish wax worms or meal worms under a float.

The Oswego river is rising and although it has plenty of fish it was slow this past week. White jigs and pink eggs are working best.
