If you wear waders in November the odds are you are duck hunting, steelhead fishing or trapping. Regardless you better be prepared for what Mother Nature is dishing out and we finally got a little taste of it yesterday. 50 mph winds, rain and temps in the 30's by days end. Now that is more like November weather. Say goodbye to the blue jean and sneaker crowd. See ya in the spring!!
On the salmon river, whether you call them ironheads, steelies, chromers, or holy shit, the river is teaming with old and new fish.
The water flow has been 335cfs with some run-off and will most likely stay at that level through the weekend.
Steelhead and browns are scattered throughout the faster runs and gravel areas of the river. The anglers having the most success have reported that the key is to cover lots of water because the fish are spread out. Suggested patterns are beads in glow roe, tangerine and cheeses doodle, blue and pink egg sacs, estaz eggs, glo bugs, nymph's and large stoneflies. Work the areas at the heads & tails of the larger pools.
When there is ample room to fish we are doing very well, when it is crowded or Mondays after a heavy pressure weekend we are struggling for a few. Evidence of this happened just this week. Monday I worked hard for just a couple fish as they were tight lipped and the pressure was still intense. Tuesday and today it was all you wanted as we had a lot of unfished water the weather changed and there were not many people on the river.
The small streams are also fishing well with a good mix of steelhead and brown trout.
On Oneida lake, the weather cooperated over the past weekend making for some good fishing. By late Saturday afternoon there was evidence of shad along the shoreline. The Fremac Waterfront and the east tip of Dutchman's Island.produced good numbers of walleye Again, it was the Jr. Thundersticks in blue/silver and black/silver that took most of the fish.
