Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
Sorry again for the lack of updates. This is one of my busiest times of year, as I am flat out on the river, trying to publish the summer issue of the magazine, trying to get the lake boat ready, getting the walleye boat ready and spring projects around the home. But hey I am living the dream
This past week has been great. We had some beautiful weather, biting fish and it was pretty quiet until Friday and now it is very, very busy on the river. Fish are biting and everyone wants in on the action.
Eggs, flies, plugs, worms, spinners, you name it, they bite it. We still have spawners on the gravel, spawnouts laying in the soft water and dropbacks lying in the fast pockets waiting for something to pounce on. What a tremendous fishery we have here in New York State.
I feel privileged to be able to make a living on such a wonderful resource and yet so many abuse it.
I hate to bring up the bad side but, the littering is disgusting. Why can't you pick up your own trash?
Brown trout fishing along the southeastern shoreline of Lake Ontario has been fair to excellent from Sandy Pond to Sodus Bay. Smithwicks off the boards, Needlefish and Raider spoons in Black and silver are working best.
Now is the time to get that boat in and do some near shore fishing. Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating. The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to Sunset Bay.
The bullheads are biting on Sandy Pond in the back channels and around the boat slips. The best fishing is at night with worms being the top bait. Other areas include The Salmon River Estuary, The Grindstone Marsh and the Little Salmon River.
There has never been a better time to come to the Lake O region and spend some quality time with family and friends. Lake rivers, streams, ponds, from steelhead to bullhead, we have it all!!
