Salmon River, Lake Ontario Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
March 26, 2010
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

The last few days have been heaven for driftboat guides. We have beautiful conditions with high colored water and we can reach the spots that others can't. The bite has been on and we are seeing many smiling faces. We all get our share of favorable conditions and we beat our boats to death all winter in very low water so now it is our turn.
The recent rain and the last of the snow melt will have a major effect on the local stream fishing right through the weekend.
The Salmon River is at 1,800cfs with additional run-off. It will be tough going for bank anglers, so I suggest fishing the small creeks or concentrate your efforts on the lakeshore at the mouths of the creeks. Worms's beads and eggs have been the top producers and they will continue to take the majority of fish in the upcoming weeks. Keep in mind that this recent cold snap will definitely slow down the bite. Keep your expectations low and fish hard.

April 1st is the opening day of trout season on inland streams across the state. Locally area creeks are in great shape and the opening week should be quite enjoyable with pleasant temperatures and plenty of fish for area anglers.

The Oswego River is still in flood stage but the Harbor is producing some nice catches of brown trout as well a few rainbows and dropback steelhead. They are running tons of water down this river, so please be careful.

The lakeshore fishing for brown trout will also go into high gear this weekend as boaters work the shoreline at the mouths of the tributaries. Troll slowly and concentrate your efforts in and around the warmest water.

The hatchery at Altmar will be collecting its steelhead eggs this coming week. This is always great to observe. Contact Fran at the Hatchery at 298-7605 for the schedule.

April 6 & 26 is still open. Prime time dates!!
