Salmon River, Oak Orchard Fishing Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
September 24, 2008
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

With over a week under my belt on the slammin salmon river, I continue to live the dream. Great weather, great clients, fair fishing and just a plain ole good time by all.

You really have to work for them most days but with this weather, who would complain. Cold clear nights and sunny warm afternoons has been the norm.

The infamous Fritz Becker is on day four of his first fall pilgrimage and he has been on fire most days. Plugs or flies the fish just find him.

He claims this is his best trip ever, but I don't think so.

Rain for the weekend? We can only hope. The river is a a very lean 335 and some run-off would really be a welcome site.

Stay tuned for more.

Western New York fishing report by Jay Peck & Capt. John Oravec

Water temperatures are slowly improving in all of the area, rivers and streams. It is still early yet, but there is a few salmon starting to show up in the Genesee River and in the Oak Orchard River. Starting with the Oak Orchard most of the salmon that are in the river are either at the dam or located down river at the three bridges area. The portion of the river below the dam is still very weedy and has very few fish. The Genesee River needs to have a word of caution. The powerhouse is not generating electricity, so all the water is going over the falls. As result the falls pool is extremely slippery. Last week a fishermen slipped into the falls pool and drowned. When fishing the Genesee River keep in mind of the danger. For now Genesee Rivers is still flowing high and dirty, with the weather we are having the water levels and color should be improving in approximately a week. After that it may be productive to do a little salmon fishing. For now the best and most consistent action is still concentrated around the lake peers. Your fishing will be from very early morning on, depending on the conditions. Also best fishing is during windy weather, the rougher the weather the better the fishing. You can try fishing with spoons in colors of lime green and chartreuse. One of the most successful methods is to fish floating egg sack on a slip sinker rig. www.jaypeckguides.com

King Salmon fishing continues hot then cold here off western basin ports of Oak Orchard ,olcott and Wilson. When west winds blow in warm stacked water the mature kings go crazy hitting in 30 to 60 ft of water .Best lures are J-Plug type lures inGreen glo, Fire tiger and silver off downriggers and leadcore .Best to skip the wire divers /fly rigs in this shallow to avoid cut-offs .Troutman had 11 or 18 saturday 50 ft of water ,all day bite ,weighing in at 250 lbs of fish ! When the east winds blow in the cold water try trolling spoons with divered opti or Pro chip /Atommik fly rigs 4-6 miles out 55 to 95 ft down on fresh kings and steels feeding in massive bait rafts. Please fish the buddy system out there at this season and maintain up to date weather patterns ,ok! Be safe and have fun Capt John Oravec .com
