Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
This was a super busy weekend and thankfully the water was up and that helped to spread everyone out. Reports were fair to great, depending on who you talked to and where they were.
The spawning grounds throughout the salmon river is loaded with kings. Everyone is catching fish! Ellis Cove, Fraziers Run, The upper Trestle and the gravel above the Sportsman pool are all holding good numbers of salmon.
The fishing in the lower end of the river was steady with good numbers of kings, brownsand steelhead moving through there throughout the weeknd. The Douglaston Salmon Run reported another steady day of good King fishing with some steelhead and browns mixed in. Suggested patterns are comets, nymphs, large stoneflies and streamers. For all of the bait fisherman, blue, pink and chartreuse egg sacs have been the preferred colors of choice. Please remember to be careful, respect the water and use caution when wading.
I got lucky this past week and made the right move each day. Bouncing from the river to several differnt tribs kept things going and the variety was nice.

The salmon fishing is steadily improving in both Oak Orchard River and the Genesee River. Starting with the Oak Orchard River; More salmon are show up almost every day in the Orchard River system. Most of the fish are still concentrated at the dam. However Ware temperatures are cooling and more fish are holding in the pools down river of the dam. The weeds in the river are still present but they are quickly thinning out, once the weeds have cleared the river, landing a salmon will be much easier. Peer fishing with egg sacs and casting spoons is still productive during low light hours and stormy conditions. From this point on the number of salmon that are running the river should increase rapidly. The Brown trout that Oak Orchard River is known for have not start to run yet. You may find a stray here there but most of the Browns will not run for two to three weeks yet. The Genesee River water flows have come down considerably this past week, water color has also improved greatly. As a result the salmon fishing has improved dramatically. Most of the fishing is still concentrated up near the falls area and powerhouse pool. Please keep in mind that the power station is not generating power and all the water is coming over the falls. The falls pool is extremely slippery and we have had one drowning all ready this fall. If the water spray is too intense, you may consider trying to fish downstream around Seth Green Island. At this location there is not as many salmon, however these fish may not have experienced any fishing pressure yet. The Genesee River has been known to receive small runs of early October steelhead. These fish are often encountered around the Seth Green Island area.
The cool temperatures helped to improve the fishing in the Oswego river. Fresh salmon and a good push of trout has made their way into the river. Larry from the salmon shop said that fish are spread throughout the river and the fishing is great. The water level isstill lowabout 1500 cfs. Look for the most action from the Utica St. bridge to the dam. Egg sacs, skein, wooly buggers and egg pattern flies, are working well.
On Oneida Lake Perch fishing is very good. Fish in the shallows, in the weeds, around the weeds and in deep water; it all seems to be working with fathead minnows being the choice bait. Nightcasting for walleyes has not materialized although an occasional one has been jigged up in deep water. The water temperature is 60 degrees and things will pick up as the temperature drops into the mid 50s.
