Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
The weather over the last few days has been outstanding if you are a steelhead fisherman. Good reports are coming in with anglers getting plenty of action on both the salmon and Oswego rivers.
The Salmon River is running a perfect 750 cfs and there are plenty of fish just waiting to be caught. Fish egg sacs, beads and small flies in blue, pink and white. Look for the fish to be in the deepest part of the pools.
There is still some shelf ice in the mid and lower sections of the river, so take caution when trying to fish these areas.
The water level on the Oswego river is a fishable 7,800cfs but ice and slush are still a problem on the colder days.
Steelhead and brown trout are taking worms, minnows, egg sacs and white bucktail jigs.
There is adequate ice in many areas of Oneida Lake but walking can be a bit difficult because of the slush.
Reports of good to excellent walleye and perch catches are coming in from Dunham and Frenchman Islands, Buoy 121 and to the east at Lewis Point. Most anglers are jigging with Swedish Pimples dressed with a buckeye minnow or a jigging Rapala enhanced with bait. The sonar is also accounting for a few walleyes. Yellow perch are responding to mousies and spikes fished with more finesse than the typical heavy handed jigging for walleyes. Most areas plenty of ice but as always, use caution.
The ice fishing on Sandy Pond continues to be good with 10 to 15 inches of ice. The perch bite has been excellent with the pike bite being on and off. There is some slush and snow on top of the ice but temperatures are expected to drop by the end of the week, which will put a good hard top on the ice once again. I was able to spend one morning there last week and the perch bite was on. You had to weed through 10 dinks to get a good keeper, but that is half the fun!
