Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report
Well in spite the low water we are having a season that you dream about. The fishing is nothing short of incredible.
At day's end many many of my long time clients say to me, Troy: This was the best day of fishing we have ever had.
All the fish are now scattered top to bottom, with more coming in the bottom end each day.
The spawning grounds throughout the salmon river is loaded with kings, Coho's and steelhead. Too many steelhead for this time of year, as they are getting beat on, but it is what it is.
Ellis Cove, Frazier's Run, The upper Trestle and the gravel above the Sportsman pool are all holding good numbers of spawning salmon. The fishing in the lower end of the river is steady with good numbers of kings and steelhead moving through there yesterday.
Suggested patterns are comets, nymphs, large stoneflies and streamers. For all of the bait fisherman, blue, pink and chartreuse egg sacs have been the preferred colors of choice.
The cool temperatures coming will help to survival of released fish. The water has been near 60 and the fish struggle for oxygen. Please land them quick and release them as fast as possible.
Stephanie from Fat Nancy's West said that fish are spread throughout the river and the fishing is great. The water level is running about 4,500cfs. Look for the most action from the Utica St. bridge to the dam. Egg sacs, skein, wooly buggers and egg pattern flies, are working well. A good number of steelhead have been reported throughout the river and anglers are finding some walleye at night.
On Oneida Lake Perch fishing is very good. Fish in the shallows, in the weeds, around the weeds and in deep water; it all seems to be working with fathead minnows being the choice bait. Nightcasting for walleyes has not materialized although an occasional one has been jigged up in deep water. The water temperature is 60 degrees and things will pick up as the temperature drops into the mid 50s.
