Salmon River Report

Capt. Troy Creasy
March 2, 2009
Salmon River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Straight up I am sick of this weather. If someone ever talks about global warming, they have never been to upstate NY.
Friday was the rare warm up with heavy rains and a mediocre bite. We out a few away, but worked hard for them.

Saturday was back to normal with below zero temps and a harsh bitter wind. It never hit 15 on Saturday and the ice was unreal. We managed to land four fish, but we really worked for them

Sunday was even colder in the am as I had minus 7 when I pushed the boat off. Less wind today to start, but it came up mid-day driving the wind-chill back down below zero. We fished a super long day and fished real hard to come up empty handed. We hooked a few, broke one off and that was that.

Chaumont Bay Sandy Pond and Black Lake continues to produce great catches of perch.
Sandy Pond is giving up some nice size pike as well. Large shiners and jigs in 10 to 20 FOW are working best

On Oneida lake Reports of good to excellent walleye and perch catches are coming in from Dunham and Frenchman Islands, Buoy 121 and to the east at Lewis Point. Most anglers are jigging with Swedish Pimples dressed with a buckeye minnow or a jigging Rapala enhanced with bait. The sonar is also accounting for a few walleyes. Yellow perch are responding to mousies and spikes fished with more finesse than the typical heavy handed jigging for walleyes.

The water level on the Oswego river is a fishable 10,000cfs but ice and slush are still a problem on the colder days.
Steelhead and brown trout are taking worms, minnows, egg sacs and white bucktail jigs.

The salmon river is running a perfect 750 cfs and there are plenty of fish just waiting to be caught. Fish egg sacs and small flies in pink and white. Look for the fish to be in the deepest slowest water.
I know it is cold but break up the winter blues and spend sometime outside withfamily and friends.
