First day of winter signals great snapper fishing

Carl Muir

Coromandel - Saltwater Fishing Report

The first day of winter greeted us yesterday and as per usual the snapper were on tap in the shallows. As the water in close cools, the snapper move in and the next three months is some of the best time to softbait in the shallows.

We're working between 10-15m casting softbaits ahead of the boat and hooking some hard fighting 10-17pound snapper, great fighters in the shallows.

The kingi fishing is still going great guns, with good fish in close, but dynamite fishing around the outer seamounts. 95% of the yellowtail kingis we're catching are put back to fight another day, ensuring we keep a strong recreational kingi fishery on our back doorstep.

All the best
Carl
