Cold Water Flounder and Trout

Capt. Butch Foster
January 26, 2014
Southport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today we decided to attempt to locate the Speckled Trout again and with the tide falling and approaching low tide near sunset this evening, Capt. Butch and myself hit the water with the 19' Carolina Skiff this afternoon with hopes of putting some fish in the boat for a photo shoot and then quick release to fight another day! Capt. Butch was trying a new bait today, a Berkley Powerbait Shrimp. 2nd cast! Capt. Butch set the hook on the new selection and his rod doubled over, FISH ON!!! Within minutes the Trout was in the boat, picture taken, and released!

With this strong front on the way, we thought that the bite was going to be on fire this afternoon; however, this was not the case and the fish decided they were going to make us work for our bites. Capt. Butch continued to work the Berkley Shrimp and I began to work through my "confidence lure set" until I finally found a Speckled that was interested in my Chartreuse 1/4oz jig head with a smoke/metalflake curly-tail grub. Pictured and release. I continued to work this selection for awhile longer with no results. Capt. Butch had now switched over to a D.O.A. 1/4 oz Shrimp and it wasn't long til he had another Trout in the boat.

We began to work a new location and the water was a little more clear with the strong wind blowing down the creek we were in so I switched over to an oldie but proven selection; the Christmas tree curly tail with an orange 1/4 oz jig head. Bam! Another nice Trout in the boat and successfully released. Then came the short strikes, Capt. Butch had a couple as did I, then his rod doubled over again almost as if he were hung up but then the fish began to come to the surface..... A FLOUNDER! The bait that tricked him into biting, this new selection of Berkley Powerbait Shrimp! I can see this being a 'go-to' lure for us in the future! All baits used today were tipped with Pro-Cure Shrimp scent attractant, this stuff has proven itself time and time again! Baits and scents used are pictured below.

Capt. Butch and I discussed earlier today that this year we are going to begin to detail our lure selections and baits of choice when applicable in our reports this year, we hope this betters your catches and helps our followers out! Here at Yeah Right Charters we appreciate you guys and as always if you have any questions feel free to email, message us on Facebook, or call anytime and we will help if we can. If you haven't 'liked' us on Facebook yet, I would highly suggest it, Capt. Butch and I are posting on there nearly daily as well as others and we are hoping that this summer as more get to fishing the area that we will be able to share their pictures and fishing stories on our FB page, making it more of a fishing community page. We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you on the water soon!

til then, FISH ON!!!
