ProFishNC Charters: Topsail & Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report

Capt. Trevor Smith
October 25, 2013
Topsail Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fall Fishing is now Excellent from Topsail Beach, Wrightsville Beach, to Wilmington, NC. With the recent cooler nights, our water temps have fallen into the upper 60's providing prime fishing as the fish feel winter coming and are HUNGRY.

Nearshore: This week we Filled Coolers nearshore vertical jigging and bottom fishing off of Topsail and Wrightsville Beach (all within 7 miles of the beach!). We managed limits of Grey Trout, Big Black Seabass, Triggerfish, Silver Snapper & Spanish Mackerel (Just to name a few:). The False Albacore and Spanish Mackerel are feeding super heavy right now as well. There is a "mass migration" of bait going on right now off our coast and is providing some un-paralled sight fishing action.

*Tip: Find a ledge or good structure, find your "Anchor Course" and anchor over it. Many Species that traditionally hold in deeper waters most of the year are feeding & breeding in our Nearshore waters right now. Don't overshoot the fish as the Big Gag Grouper and Triggerfish are within 7 miles of the beach RIGHT NOW!*

Inshore: Inshore fishing is on fire right now as we have been catching good numbers of big flounder and speckled trout on artificial baits. I prefer using "Blue Water Candy" jigheads (super sharp) with a Berkeley Gulp shrimp or grub. The Red Drum have been hungry as well as they are hitting both cut and live bait right now. Just last week we landed two Trophy Red Drum in one trip (both over 40" and pushed 30+lbs)!

Remember: As the ocean water cools, slow your presentation inshore with your artificial bait as the slower twitch and retrieve will produce more strikes... CONVERSELY: Speed up your presentation nearshore! The baitfish are FAST right now alluding the Mackerel and F. Albacore. and you will catch more nearshore gamefish casting to the schools of top-feeding fish with a blistering fast retrieve.
