Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

Capt. Richard Bennett

Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big Flounder are Here!

Hi Folks,

Fishing has been good to excellent this week. Red drum and large flounder have been the high points.

Here's my report: For the Week Ending May 28, 2003

Inshore: Large flounder, the door mat size have arrived. We are commonly catching fish over 4 pounds and some in the 8 pound range. Live menhaden fished on carolina rigs are doing the trick. Also, good catches of red drum on the falling tide have highlighted the week. Live menhaden or fresh chunks of cut bait work best.

Nearshore: Spanish mackerel are becoming more plentiful along the beaches and inlets. Bluefish are mixed in with them and yesterday we hung a cobia on a clarkspoon....never got him to the boat.

Offshore: King mackerel action is good at the 10 mile areas as well as the 23 mile rock and WR4. Drone spoons, large clarkspoons, cigar minnows, and ballyhoo work well if live menhaden are not available.

Gulfstream: When boats have been able to get out, wahoo and mahi have provided the bulk of the action.

Let's Go Fishing!
