Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
Summer is here and the fish are TOO!!!
Hi Folks,
This week has seen a great week of king mackerel fishing nearshore and the continued presence of flounder and drum inshore.
Here's my report for the week ending June 24, 2003:
Inshore: Every day is different and some days fishing is better than others, but most days the reds and the flounder have provided good to great action, with the biggest flounder of the week weighing in a 7.6 pounds. Now that's a doormat!!! Best bait continues to be live menhaden and they are easiest found in the Carolina Beach Yacht Basin. Carolina rigs are the common terminal tackle.
Nearshore: Spanish mackerel are showing up in better numbers, but are still picky. The good news is king macks are showing up steady from 4-6 miles. For these fish best bait is spoons fished deep on downriggers or planers and ballyhoo fished on top.
Offshore: More kings and mahi mahi from 14 to 25 miles out. Best bait is live menhaden, slow trolled.
Gulfstream: Best bet is good sized mahi with some nice wahoo mixed in, along with some yellowfin and blackfin tuna. Billfish are active too.
The weather is heating up and so is the fishing. If you get a chance get on the water!
