Wrightsville Beach to Cape Fear River

July 9, 2003
Wrightsville Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report

Week Ending July 9, 2003

Hi Folks,

Well, summer has truly arrived with all its heat and humidity. The water has warmed a bit, the wind has blown fairly hard out of the SW consistently, and the moon has been playing tricks with the tides this week due to its proximity to the equator. As a result, fishing has been off just slightly this week. The fish are still there, it's just a matter of being around when they decide to bite...and sometimes that takes a while and makes for slow fishing. But the good news is the winds are supposed to slow down by the weekend and the moon should get back to where it should be and all should be well again.

Here's my report: Week Ending July 9, 2003:

Inshore: While we have caught some nice flounder and red drum this week, fishing has been spotty. Look for that to improve by the weekend. Plenty of menhaden around and the finger mullet are showing up too.

Nearshore: Spanish mackerel have been cooperating overall and a new addition to the mix, the frigate mackerel, has shown up in good numbers as well. While this fish fights very well, it is really of no value on the table...best to release them. Spanish have been biting well out to the ten mile areas.

Offshore: King mackerel and mahi are biting from about 10-30 miles, with the better bites further out in deeper water. Best bait is live menhaden.

Gulfstream: Best action has been on wahoo and mahi. Some good yellowfin action has been around too.

With the clear, hot weather, the 4th of July weekend was crazy as expected. Hopefully now things will settle back down (yesterday we saw very few on the water) and we can get back to catching some nice fish.
